II
House and railings. Late C17 with early-C19 refenestration. Painted coursed limestone rubble with internal timber framed partition walls, and slate roof with catslide over outshut to rear. Formerly T-plan (c.f. No. 4, Welsh Street), now L-plan. Two storeys and attic. Semi-integral end stack to right with brick top stage, and brick ridge end-stack to left.
Fill: square panels (internal). Three bays, narrow projecting centre bay breaking through eaves to form dormer gable with two-light casement; glazing bar sashes, sixteen-pane in outer bays; central half-glazed door with pilastered surround and triangular pedimented hood. Dovecote in gabled wing to rear.
INTERIOR: double staggered-purlin roof with double queen-strut trusses and lath and plaster infil panels; late C17 L-shaped staircase with landing, closed string, turned balusters, moulded grip rail square newel posts, and bottom newel post with bulbous finial; splat balusters shaped to represent twisted balusters on first floor and in short staircase to attic; C17 fireplaces.
Despite the early C19 fenestration, this is still a very complete example of a late C17 house. This house extends behind Nos. 4 and 6, Welsh Street (q.v.) which also incorporates part of it. Late C19 cast iron railed enclosure at front.
