Barn, now used as a stable. Early C16, late C16, mid C17, C18. Timber-framed on red brick walling, weatherboarded, peg-tiled roof. Aligned N-S on sloping ground and walling deepest at N end to retain level base for timberwork. Rectangular plan of 7 bays, 2 waggon porches on W side. EXTERIOR: E elevation somewhat irregular as a result of alteration, one C20 top-opening casement window with glazing bars at each end, N 4x2 panes, S 3x2 panes. 2 iron-framed fixed lights with segment heads and glazing bars, 6x4 panes in S end with 2-sectioned stable door between, second stable door with fixed window of 5 panes above in centre of range. W elevation has hipped roofed waggon porch towards N end, roof eaves project with 2 bracket struts. Another porch at the extreme S end with half hipped roof. Both porches have C20 2-leaved upper doors with lower closed sections, a remnant of arrangements for threshing. Central C20 2-leaved door with, to S C20 top-opening casement window as on E elevation, 3x2 panes, to N, C20 2-sectioned stable door with 5 panes fixed light above. To N of N porch is a lean-to, slated, weatherboarded addition with C20 3x2 paned, top-opening casement window. S end elevation plain. N end has C20 sliding door. INTERIOR: the 7 bays are of progressively later build from S to N in 3 phases. Bay one early C16, heavy construction, jowled post, end tie-beam has slight camber, curved tie-beam and arcade braces, arcade plate has edge halved and bridled scarf, raking queen stuts, upper roof renewed, side aisle walling renewed in C19 or C20. Waggon porch added to earlier structure in mid-C17, jowled posts, primary wall bracing. Bays 2 and 3 added in late C16 similar to phase one but now with face-halved and bladed scarf joint on arcade plates and aisle wall plates and generally of lighter scantling: tie-beam and supporting braces are straight. Side aisled with straight post/tie triangular bracing. Roof has trapped side purlins, collars supported by raking queen struts, also intermediate unsupported collars. Side aisle walling unusual with primary arched braces and secondary studding. N end of bay 3, weatherboarded and originally a closed frame - quite clearly once the N end of the barn. Bays 4-7 C17, simply attached to older barn end with way cut through. Slender face-halved and bladed scarfs, arcade posts and braces some reworking - original system has jowled post, straight tie-beams with slightly curved braces, some now removed and replaced by C18 solid knee braces; jowls cut away to accommodate arcade bracing, square section, well curved, accompanying carpenters' marks in Roman numerals. Aisles have rear in-sloping braces between sills and ties. Roof of simple form, side purlins with collars (no support struts), outer side walling slender, of oak and elm, C18 or C19. Waggon porch to W of bay 5 built as one with main structure, E side of this bay has original barn doorway blocked. A date of 1757 with a cyma and bead moulding below is cut into the jowl of the W arcade post of the S side of bay 5 and if it dates anything it is contemporary with the substitution of knee braces for normal tie-beam braces in bays 4 and 7. Shenfield Hall (qv) and the barn form a group.
