Description

HELSTON

SW6427 PENELLAZ HILL
631-1/4/198 (South side)
Old Mathematical School

GV II

Former literary and scientific institute, now part of
freemasons' hall. Datestone 1799. Faced coursed greenstone,
granite dressings including ashlar plinth, quoins, jambstones,
voussoirs, mid-floor string and frame of triangular pediment
to front with scrolled kneelers; asbestos slate roof.
Rectangular plan. 2 storeys; principal 1st-floor with
round-arched window openings, blind to symmetrical 1-window
front end and 4-window range to right-hand return. 2x12-pane
horned sashes on the left and 2 openings blocked with brick on
the right. INTERIOR not inspected. The pedimented gable of
this building is a prominent feature of the Helston townscape.
It marks an important phase in the social history of the town,
built at a time when Helston was benefiting from the tin
mining industry and fine villas, such as in Cross Street, were
erected in the vicinity.
(Information from Martin Matthews of Helston Museum).
