SD4761NE MARKET STREET
1685-1/7/169 (North side)
Nos.54A, 56 AND 58
GV II
Row of 3 houses, now shops. Early C19 with C20 alterations.
Sandstone ashlar to the front, with coursed rubble and dressed
stone dressings on the rear and on the left-hand wall to China
Street. Slate roofs with a coped gable to the left.
Double-depth plan with doorways, originally, to the right and
with chimney stacks to the left. Each house has 3 storeys
above a cellar and a wide tripartite window, off-set slightly
to the left, on the upper floors. The ground floors have been
altered by the insertion of shop fronts. The upper windows
have plain reveals, square flush mullions and sashes without
glazing bars. The doorway to No.56, which appears to be
original, has plain jambs. The gable to China Street has a
full-height stair window, with glazing bars, on the first and
second floors. The shop front of No.54A now extends to the
right below No.54 (qv).
