Former house, now shops, offices and flats. Mid C17, early and
late C18, with C19 alterations.
Market Place elevation rendered, probably over timber-framing;
Welsh slate roof to left, artificial slate roof to right; one
rendered stack visible over ridge to left, 2 similar stacks to
right; Churchyard elevation coursed squared limestone with
ashlar dressings; stone slate roof hipped to left; rendered
ridge stack to right.
Two mid C17 buildings to Market Place with interlocking plans
refronted as single composition to rear (Churchyard) elevation
early C18, refronted to Market Place retaining distinction
between 2 buildings late C18.
Market Place elevation has to left (No.9) 3 storeys, attic and
cellar; 3-window range. First floor has three 6/6-pane sashes
in plain reveals; second floor has 3 similar windows. Ground
floor has C19 shopfront with two 4-light windows with moulded
timber mullions flanking half-glazed door with overlight;
cast-iron panels to stall risers with openings to cellar now
blocked behind; panelled pilasters flanking door and to left
and right with carved console brackets flanking frieze and
blind box. 2 gabled dormers with 2-light leaded casements.
Lead pipe to left with lead hopper also collects water from
lead pipe at No.7 Market Place (qv).
Market Place to right is 3 storeys and attic; 6-window range.
First floor has 6 plate glass horned sashes in moulded timber
surrounds, 2 to centre with segmental heads; second floor has
6 windows similar to first floor. C20 timber shopfront has 3
windows with glazing bars, recessed glazed door to centre,
reeded pilasters, deep frieze and blind boxes. 5 gabled
dormers with 2-light leaded casements.
Rear elevation to Churchyard has one gable to left, early C18
refacing to right. 3 storeys and attic, 9-window range.
First floor has to left, two 2-light timber casements, to
right seven 6/6-pane sashes in moulded stone architraves with
moulded cills and segmental heads with keystones; second floor
has one 3/6-pane sash in plain reveal to left, 7 sash windows
similar to first floor to right.
Ground floor obscured by C20 single-storey brick extensions
with glazed roofs except for C19 half-glazed door with
overlight in cut-down window architrave similar to those above
to right; other similar architraves survive inside extensions.
Gable to left has 2-light chamfered stone mullion and transom
window, apparently renewed; 3 hipped dormers with 2-light
leaded casements to right. Moulded strings over second floor
and in gable to left; to right, band courses resting on
keystones of ground and first floor windows, coved eaves
cornice.
Small 2-storey extension to far left with stone slate hipped
roof has firescape door to first floor.
INTERIOR to left (No.9) has to ground floor incised name
CHAVASSE in jamb of rear door, beam with ovolo moulding and
step stop in passage to rear, 2 boxed out beams to front.
Winder staircase, C19/C20 to first floor; first floor front
has 2 chamfered beams with run-out stops, supported to left on
carved wall posts with ovolo-mouldings with run-out stops,
dentil cornice and bracket heads; second floor front left has
2 similar wall posts supporting ceiling beams which continue
to front right, boxed out except for short length on landing,
moulded with carved decoration to soffit; wall posts to front
right removed.
Mid C17 scissor-string staircase from first to third floors
with turned balusters, deep handrail and newel posts with
incised mouldings with pendents with mitred capping. Second
floor rear has early C18 stone fireplace and beam with run-out
stop; 2-bay butt-purlin roof with ridge purlin, probably C18,
to front range.
Nos 11-17 has to ground floor rear right reproduction
fireplace, panelled fireplace wall with shell-hood niche to
right of chimney-breast, run cornice; ground floor rear centre
has chamfered beam with run-out stop; to right closed string
staircase with turned balusters, probably C19, from ground to
first floor, continues in simplified form to second floor.
First floor far right has raised-and-fielded panelling, run
cornice, early C20 iron fireplace, 2 boxed-out beams; first
floor centre has raised moulded panelling, timber cornice,
plastered beams with run-out stops with broad notches with
leaf decoration (cf Dunstall House, The Old Grammar School
(qv)), late C18 chimneypiece with composition decoration,
marble slips but no grate, jib door in panelling; first floor
rear centre has plastered beam with run-out stop and broad
notch; second floor front centre has 2 boxed-out beams, no
fireplace; gable to rear has chamfered stone
mullion-and-transom window.
Flat to first and second floor rear approached via closed
string staircase with heavy turned balusters to rear left
which continues as dog-leg to second floor; first floor rear
left and centre have chamfered beams with run-out stops, first
floor rear centre has reproduction fireplace, cornice and
other fittings; first floor centre front has 2 chamfered beams
with run-out stops, C19 timber fireplace; second floor rear
left formed by timber panelled partition; second floor rear
right and front right have chamfered beams with run-out stops.
