9/10008 Fir Tree Farmhouse and attached outbuildings

GV II

Farmhouse. Late C17, extended in C18 and early/mid C19, and refronted mid C19. Roughly coursed local rubble, probably Dolomitic Conglomerate, with some later C19 brick dressings; gabled pantile roofs; rendered and brick left-end and ridge stacks to house. Original T-plan with rear left kitchen wing to 2-unit front range which has heated rooms with off-centre lobby entry dividing left-hand from larger right-hand room. 2 storeys; 3-window range with segmental heads to mid C19 door and horned 8/8-pane sashes. Rear wing and flanking C19 outshuts have C19/20 2-light casements. Interior noted as having retained original chamfered and stop-chamfered beams to ground floor; C17/18 plank doors with wrought-iron fittings; mid C18 china cupboard in right-hand room with panelled doors and shaped shelves; large open fireplace to left with moulded mantleshelf; C18 moulded surround to flint-floor fireplace on right of axial stack; roof rebuilt in C19, but retains elements of original roof with staggered butt purlins. Subsidiary Features: early/mid C19 coach house/cider house with loft to right, with plank loft door above segmental-arched carriage entry; interior noted as having C19 cider press. Two-storey early/mid C19 stables to left, with plank loft door above 2 plank doors with timber lintels; timber lintels over 2-light casements to each floor on left. Later C19 brick and stone outbuildings with pantile roof further to left. The original building comprises an interesting example of a more centralised plan form, representing an early incursion of this type into the vernacular of this area.
