Detached house. C17 core with C18 and C19 alterations and additions. Squared
and coursed rubble with stone copings, lias headers and C20 double Roman tile
roofs. C17 rear wing with c.1740 roadside addition and further, rear, C19
additions. 2-storey, 5 window west front. All windows are C19 wooden cross-
casements. Central wooden latticework porch with semi-circular head and 6-raised
and fielded panel door. End brick stacks. Interior. Ground floor left hand
room has raised and fielded panelling and a bolection moulded fireplace surround
dating from c.1740. Contemporary staircase with wreathed pine handrail, turned
balusters and carved tread ends. Beneath the staircase is a blocked 2-light
chamfered mullion and further C17 evidence is the wall space of a former newel
staircase in the north-east corner of the rear wing. The Rev. Augustus Toplady
is stated to have lodged here.
