WINSFORD FORMER U.D. GRANGE LANE SJ 66 NW 4/99 Barn at Knights Grange recreation centre. - GV II Barn, now sports complex. Early/Mid C18. Brown English garden wall bond brick with slate roof. Two storeys. Entrance front: of three parts with a slightly projecting central section which has 3 cambered headed ground floor doorways. One mezzanine loft door to right of centre with stone hinge dressings and two C20 windows to the first floor with cambered heads and hinge dressings indicating their original function as loft doorways. Diamond and Y-shaped breathers to first floor. To the right are 3 ground floor cambered headed doorways and one cambered-headed shuttered opening. X and diamond shaped breathers between floors and five first floor cambered headed windows with Y and diamond shaped breathers between. Left of centre has C20 double doorway to left of centre with a cambered headed doorway to left and another at right with C20 inserted window to right of centre. Two mezzanine doorways letting onto a timber balcony. Cross and diamond - shaped breathers between floors. Cambered headed window to first floor right originally a loft doorway with some hinge dressings. Interior: Four exposed queen post trusses with V-struts to the apex, two sets of purlins and wind bracing. Some trusses have chamfered end-stopped tie-beams. The barn and house adjacent (q.v.) were originally the property of Vale Royal Abbey.
