Description

STOURBRIDGE MARY STEVENS PARK
SO 9083
SP 1076 Gates, Piers and Railings
at Principal Entrance

GV II

Gates, piers and railings. c1930. Fine ashlar piers with wrought-iron gates and
railings in Neo-Georgian style. Four massive piers with finely moulded plinths,
panels and cornices are topped by elaborate metal lantern finials. In between
are wrought-iron double and single gates with very elaborate standards and overthrows. Curving out from either side are two quadrant walls with tall spear-head railings ending in a pier smaller but echoing the design of the main ones. Ernest Stevens an industrialist and major benefactor of Stourbridye gave the park and these gates to the Town in memory of his wife in 1929. There are inscription plaques on both sides of the central piers.
