5/11C Byres and barn north-
east of Mechi Farmhouse

GV II

Byres and barn incorporating the former turbine house tower and stables. 1863-4
for William Lawson of Brayton. Polychrome rubble walls with flush red-sandstone
quoins, under Welsh slate roof, hipped over tower. Long triple-span single
storey byres, enclosed on 2 sides by L-shaped stables/granary, with right low
square tower and adjoining open sided barn. Boarded doors, some in segmental
arches, under loft openings, all with red-sandstone surrounds. Barn roof
supported by tall brick piers. Interior has some of the turbine shafts and
gearing. The complexities of these buildings are described by William Lawson,
Ten Years of Gentleman Farming, 1874 pp.152-155. Forms part of a model farm
group and listed for GV with Mechi farmhouse and farm buildings.
