Description

SW 72 SW MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE

4/135 Higher Tregaddra Farmhouse
10.7.57
GV II

Farmhouse. Datestone 1721. Partly dressed painted serpentine and elvan, roughly
coursed with large blocks spaced with snecks. Slate sills and granite lintels (circa
1985 insertions). Steep dry Delabole slate roofs with tall serpentine ashlar chimney
over each original gable end, the left hand one external.
Plan of overall L shape. Originally probably T shaped single depth with parlour left
and slightly larger hall/kitchen right and passage between leading to large stair and
service room projection at rear middle. Extended circa late C18 or early C19 by 1
bay at right of kitchen and service wing at right angles to rear of parlour, parallel
to, adjoining and projecting beyond original rear wing.
Two storeys. Overall 4 window south front with 3 window nearly symmetrical front of
original house, left, and 1 window front of narrow 2 storey circa late C18-early C19
extension right. Original house front has datestone with I P AD 1721 over original
doorway. Topglazed 3-pane door. Large buttress to right of doorway. Original
square window opening over doorway but the other window openings have been reduced in
width, originally very wide, now square. C20- 12-pane 2-light casements. Extension
has C20 12-pane horned sashes.
Interior is much renewed in circa 1985 but retains large hearth in kitchen.
The tall chimneys of this house are particularly notable. As a dated early C18
farmhouse it is interesting to compare with other farmhouse nearby eg. Tregithew qv.
dated 1726 and Kestle qv dated 1722 and 1744, both in Manaccan parish.
