Description

SY 08 SE NEWTON POPPLEFORD VENN OTTERY
AND HARPFORD
4/96 Garden Cottage approximately 45
- metres east of Venn Ottery Barton

GV II

Cottage, former pavilion in corner of forecourt of Venn Ottery Barton (q.v.). Late
C17 - early C18, enlarged circa 1970 to provide a cottage. The pavilion is of
exposed brick in random bond tending towards Enlgish with a slate (formerly thatch)
roof; the cottage extension is plastered brick or concrete blocks with slate roof.
Pavilion comprises a relatively tall square room over a basement (now service room)
with single storey 1-room extension on west side. The pavilion has a rear
(southern) stack. The northern and eastern sides of the pavilion have tall windows
with segmental heads and containing replacement mullion-and-upper-transom windows
with glazing bars. The basement window enlarged circa 1970. The doorways were
presumably those reused to the cottage extension. The roof is hipped on all sides.
The cottage has 3 C20 casements with glazing bars to north and 2 more with
contemporary door in the south side. Its roof is gable-ended.
The pavilion, forecourt walls (q.v.) and farmhouses (q.v.) form a group in a
picturesque setting. There are striking similarities here with nearby Elliots
Farmhouse (q.v.) which also has contemporary forecourt walls and similar pavilion.
