Description

SY 09 SE NEWTON POPPLEFORD VENN OTTERY
AND HARPFORD
4/90 Forecourt walls adjoining to south
of Elliots Farmhouse including
gate piers and pavilion
GV II

Forecourt walls, gatepiers and pavilion. Circa 1700, parts of walls repaired circa
1830 and 1940; gates of circa 1830. Brick walls with flint coping and limestone
caps to the piers; wrought iron gates. Pavilion has brick walls and stack; concrete
tile roof (originally thatch).
The front garden to south of Elliots Farmhouse (q.v.) is enclosed by Flemish bond
brick walls. The garden is terraced and the side walls ramp down following the
terraces. On the top terrace, nearest the farmhouse, each of the side walls
includes-a gateway flanked by square-section piers with soffit-moulded caps and
balls above. There are similar piers on each front corner and the front gateway has
piers with large pineapple caps. It contains circa 1830 gates with spear-headed
rails. Towards the front of the right (eastern) side wall is small square pavilion
facing into the garden. The brickwork is Flemish bond with some burnt headers. It
has a pyramid roof. There is a stack on the rear left corner serving a small room
over a brick-vaulted basement. There are brick steps up to the front over a low
segmental arch to the basement. There is now a C19 4-panel door and a tall
overlight with glazing bars and a low segmental arch over like all the apertures.
On the south side is a replacement mullion-and-transom windows with glazing bars and
there is a blind window to the rear.
There are similar forecourt walls including a pavilion at nearby Venn Ottery Barton
(q.v).
