TL 51 NE GREAT CANFIELD

2/31 BARBERRY COTTAGE

Part of service range of the manor house Fitzjohns, C18 (of which the
remainder was demolished circa 1900), converted into a dwelling. Part
timber-framed, part brick, all plastered, with tiled roof. 2 bays, aligned
N-S, with single-storey lean-to extension at S gable, and single-storey
extension to SW, both C20. Single-storey with attics in gambrel roof.
On ground floor, casement window, plain door in gabled hood, bay window
with casements, all C20. C20 casement window in catslide dormer, chimney at
N gable. Wooden bell turret on roof, with saltire bracing, pyramidal roof
and finial. This building with its distinctive bell turret is illustrated
in drawings of Fitzjohns dated 1857 in E.R.O.
