South African War Memorial, 1904 by F.W. Doyle Jones (Hartlepool). Red
Peterhead granite, York stone steps, and bronze tablets. Obelisk, with
linked volutes and bay-leaf swags at base, on tapered pedestal with
heavily-moulded cornice. Moulded stepped base with bay-leaf and cyma-recta
moulding on top step. 3 plain lower steps. Sculptured tablets, on north
and south faces of die, depict fame (south) and patriotism. Names of fallen
on raised-lettered tablet on west face. Included for historic interest.
