Description

HARTLAND THE SQUARE (east side), Hartland
SS 2524

12/185 Nos. 77 and 78

GV II

House and store. Probably C17 in origin but likely to have been considerably
altered in C20. Rendered stone, rubble walls. Gable ended natural slate roof.
Large C17 axial stack of squared stone rubble with drip-course and tapering cap.
Plan: originally one house of 3 room plan, which may have had a through-passage but
its position is now unclear. Axial stack heats central room which may have been the
hall. Left-hand room is now used as a store. C19 or early C20 lean-to at rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front of small-paned C20 casement to left
on first floor, otherwise 9 and 12-pane sashes which are probably C20 replacements.
C20 6-pane door to right of centre. To left is C20 plank door with large window
without glazing bars immediately to its right.
Interior inaccessible at time of survey but may contain C17 fireplace and other
features such as ceiling beams.
