Description

PAYHEMBURY
ST 00 SE
3/115 Yeomans Cottage
-
GV II

Cottage. Probably C18. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble or cob
stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 3-room plan cottage facing east. The right (north) end room is set back
slightly from the main front and it is a C20 addition. Thus the original cottage
has a 2-room plan. The larger room at the left (south) end is heated by a rear
lateral stack. The other room is small and unheated, probably it was some kind of
service room, either a buttery or dairy originally. 2 storeys.
Exterior: 2:1 - window front of C20 casements. The original part has a symmetrical
2-window arrangement about a central doorway which contains a C20 door behind a
contemporary thatch-roofed porch. The main roof is half-hipped each end.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but is said
to contain original carpentry detail.
Yeomans Cottage forms a group with nearby Appletree Cottage (q.v).
