Description

BUCKERELL BUCKERELL
SY 10 SW

5/108 The Old Sunday School
(formerly listed as Sunday
22.2.55 School attached to Vicarage)

GV II

Former Sunday school. Circa late 1830s, probably erected by the Reverend E.E.
Coleridge, a nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge whitewashed and rendered, probably
stone; slate roof, gabled at ends.
Plan: Adjoining the stable block to the rear of the Old Rectory. One room on plan
with a porch on the north-east side. The stable block, adjoining at the left has
been partly converted to a garage.
Exterior: Single storey. The gabled porch has splat bargeboards to the gable and, on
the right return an arched doorframe with a two-centred arched door; the front of the
porch has two-centred arched door; the front of the porch has a 2-light traceried
arched window with a hoodmould. The window is probably medieval and may have been
removed from the church when the vestry was added. The rear wall has an two-centred
arched C19 door with ornamental strap hinges. The right return has 2 arched ground
floor windows with metal frames and diamond glazing bars. 2 first floor lancets with
chamfered stone frames, the stonework may be medieval, and a hoodmould.
Interior: Barrel ceiling with moulded ribs. An unusual example of an intact
antiquarian Gothick Sunday school: group value with the church and the old Rectory.
