Description

SX 8366 IPPLEPEN FORE STREET , Ipplepen
6/138 Nos. 1 & 2 Plough Cottages
-
- II
Pair of cottages. C17. Rendered rubble walls. Slate roof gabled to left, half
hipped to right end. Rendered rubble large axial stack with drip courses.
Original plan unclear, likely to have been either pair of 1-room cottages with back
to back fireplaces or 3-room and through passage house which has been truncated at
one end and divided into 2 cottages. Probably C19 outshuts added at rear.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front. No. 1 to the left has 2 windows with off-
centre door. Late C19/early C20 3-light casements with glazing bars, ground floor
left-hand window is 2 lights C20 part glazed door under open-fronted gabled porch.
No. 2 to the right has circa late C19 3-light casement on first floor and 2-light
casement below it to the right. C19 plank and part glazed door to the left under
open-fronted gabled porch. Outshut at rear.
Interior of no. 2 inspected. The fireplace has a wooden lintel which is chamfered
with a hollow step stop on one side, it has been cut off at the other end. Beside
the fireplace is the original wood newel staircase with a probably contemporary
plank door at the bottom which has old strap hinges. Central cross beam is
chamfered with hollow step stops, supported at the rear on a chamfered wooden
corbel. On the first floor the feet of insubstantial straight principals are
visible.
Despite their modest external appearance, at least one of these cottages preserves
its C17 features relatively intact and they may also survive in no. 1.
