Garage to south of Hawkshead Fields

House converted to stables, now garage. Late C16 or early C17 with late C19
addition. Stone rubble with quoins to south-west wing, slate roof. L-plan.
North-west elevation has four garage doors, that to right-hand end in later
addition. Left return has projecting gable-end stack. Right return has
gable-end stack. Rear has signs of blocked windows and entrances and one
window. Lower end of cruck truss in face of wall. Interior has one full cruck
truss with tie beam and collar, and signs of wind braces, remains of 2nd truss to
south-west. Probably originally one-bay full-height cottage with adjoining cow
house. Remains of corbelled smokehood. Property of the National Trust, the
gift of Beatrix Potter.
