Lobby-entrance house, c.1600, altered in C17 and C19, Timber framed, plastered,
roof tiled. 4 bays, aligned NE-SW, with original 2-hearth chimney in
chimney bay, second from SW, forming a lobby entrance. Rear extension
near SW end, C19 or early C20, with its own axial chimney stack. C19 chimney
stack at NE gable. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 4 C19 or C20 casement windows,
2 late C19 doors with bracketed hoods, tiled. First floor, 3 C19 or C20
casement windows. Triangular pediment over centre of elevation, C18.
Grouped diagonal shafts on original chimney stack. Originally this house
was of one storey with attics, hearths in lower rooms only. In the late
C17 the walls were raised by about 1.5 metres, the roof rebuilt and hearths
inserted in upper rooms. In the C18 the pediment was added. In the C19
the house was divided into 2 cottages, and the rear extension added in
late C19 or early C20. Stop-chamfered ceiling beams. No wall framing
exposed, no access to roof. Both ground floor hearths blocked for C20
fireplaces. RCHM 8.
