Castle Watergate, Southampton

Uploader's Comments

Built in the 13th or 14th century, the Castle Watergate is situated in a recess of the west wall just south of the entrance to Castle Vault. In the medieval period, the gateway allowed access from the castle to Castle Quay, a private quay belonging to the king. Royal supplies were landed at the quay and stored in vaults on either side of the gate and were then carried up to the castle by way of a staircase. (Sotonopedia)
