13/1 St Margarets Station (British Rail) buildings, platform, and canopy railway

Railway station, platform and canopy. Circa 1843 for the opening of the Hertford Branch of the Northern and Eastern Railway. Yellow brick with hipped slate roofs. A long tall, E-shaped, single storey station building facing E. Wings of small projection, and boldly projecting central portico to raised entrance. A triplet of narrow round headed sash windows in each wing, two wider round headed windows on each side of centre. Low plinth, deep impost band linking openings, arches projecting to face of band and keystones to higher central arch in wings projecting further. Small wooden moulded cornice under the eaves. Open front of portico spanned by a beam with panelled face and large arched opening in each side. Square pyramid roofed building of same period attached at S end has similar features. Attached brick revetted platform on W side rampedat end. 5-bay canopy on posts with decorative cast iron brackets and frilly edging in fretted vertical boarding. (Branch Johnson (1970) 124, 128).
