TF 01 NE WITHAM ON THE HILL MAIN STREET

1507- /2/10015 The Pillared Cottage

Former estate cottage, now house. c1905 probably by A N Prentice. Coursed and banded
limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. Plain tiled half-nipped roofs with a single moulded
stone stack and a single brick stack. Quoins. U-plan. 2 storey. Entrance front has recessed
centre with central doorway. Door has a plain stone pillared porch, flanked by single 2-light
casements. Projecting single storey right wing has a single 3-light mullion window.
Projecting 2 storey left wing has a double 2-light mullion window, and above a single
3-light, segment headed casement with a rubble wedge lintel and ashlar keystone. Left return
has a single canted bay window with 3-light mullions, and to the left a projecting, pillared
verandah with 3 stone pillars, the main roof is swept down to cover this feature, beneath a
4-centred arched doorway and a small casement. This cottage was almost certainly designed
by A N Prentice who worked at Witham Hall at this time, it was designed to house the
estate Gamekeeper/Dairyman.
