The inscription is said to read in English, "Christopher, second son of Sir Robert Aske, ought not to forget the year 1536". Robert Aske was leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace in that year and, despite promise of a pardon, was executed by being hung in chains from Clifford's Tower in York Castle.
