West aspect. William Fortrey was a bell ringing enthusiast and had the church built to accomodate a ring of ten he had commissioned. There was a broach spire 156 ft (48 metres) high, but this was removed after a lightning strike in 1850, not long after it had been repaired after a previous bolt. (Photo Jul 2007).
