De Roos shield of 1285. Baron Robert de Roos of Hamlake, Yorks married the heiress Isabella dAlbini of Belvoir, Leics. On his death his heart was buried at nearby Croxton Abbey of which he was a patron. At the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII the pyx and associated monuments went to Bottesford church. This piece, preserved locally in a wall, represents -Gules three water bougets argent for de Roos, impaled with Argent two chevrons azure for Albini-. That there is only one chevron on the stone may not be important - funerary stonework often used simplified details. (Photo Sept 2012).
