House, now University of Leeds premises. 1792, restored C20.
For Thomas Livesey. Red brick, stone details, slate hipped
roof.
2 storeys, 5 bays, 1:3:1 windows, the centre 3 windows break
forward with crowning pediment. Stone plinth. Central 6-panel
door with fanlight in surround with three-quarter Tuscan
columns, entablature, dentilled pediment. Sashes, restored
frames, flat brick arches, stone sills, 1st-floor sill band
centre, rectangular recessed panels between floors.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Thomas Livesey was a cloth dresser; his house
is in the same style as Claremont, No.23 Clarendon Road (qv).
It was sold 1836 after bankruptcy proceedings, to Samuel
Birchall, a Quaker woolstapler who died there 1854; his (?)son
Edward, the Leeds architect, b.1838, lived here. The estate
was sold in 1865 to the Roman Catholic Diocese and the house
became their office, continuing as such until after 1963.
