Offices, concourse entrance and cinema, now British Rail
general offices and night club. c1935. By W Curtis Green and
WH Hamlyn. For the London, Midland and Scottish Railway
Company. In Stripped Classical style. Steel-framed with
Portland stone ashlar facade, brown brick to rear and sides. 7
storeys; plain recessed cinema facade left, 10 paired windows
to City Square, 8 paired windows and a 4-window projecting
block to Aire Street. A continuation of the City Square
frontage of the Queen's Hotel (qv).
Entrance to station concourse rises through 2 storeys on City
Square frontage: drum columns in antis and shallow moulding to
flat arch; flanking plain shop windows, late C20 fittings;
stone plaque with coat of arms to centre, 5th storey. Cinema
entrance to left has glass double doors and an obelisk above
plain lintel. Railway Company office entrance to Aire Street:
panelled double doors in keyed architrave surmounted by carved
crest with roses and thistles. Metal casements.
INTERIOR: concourse entrance has pilasters with lamp motifs
and inner lobby; cinema, now night club, interior not seen.
Part of the important LMS group of hotel, offices (qqv) and
concourse.
