War Memorial approximately 200
metres east of Church of St Chad

GV II

War memorial. c1920. Ashlar. Octagonal steps, plinth and cross
base, tall tapering chamfered cross, curved rear screen wall
on W side approx 1m high with end piers approx 2m high,
overall length 6m. '1914/ 1918' inscribed on cross base; an
oval bronze plaque is fixed on the S end pier of the screen
wall and has raised lettering: 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF FAR
HEADINGLEY/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-18'.
A list of 76 names and 'I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE'. A
plaque on the N pier has 28 names from the 1939-45 war. On the
N face of this pier a plaque commemorates the establishment of
the St Chad's Garden of Rest, laid out by Mr JW Wootton in May
1938.
