Memorial. c1876. Ashlar and marble. Square plan, rounded curb,
railing missing, plinth with inscribed panels, angels at
corners under bell-shaped canopies, coat of arms, stepped
statue base, almost full-size draped figure kneeling before a
low desk, hand raised.
The memorial commemorates Henry Rowland Marsden, JP, of Avenue
House, Leeds, Mayor of Leeds 1874-75, died 19 January 1876. He
was born in 1823, son of a retired soldier, and worked at
Marshall's Flax Mill from the age of 8 until 15, an apprentice
toolmaker. In 1848 he emigrated to New York and worked for a
firm of engineers, patenting several inventions, the most
important of which was his stone crushing machine. In 1862 he
returned to Leeds, was a member of the council 1866, elected
Liberal Alderman in 1872 and served as mayor 1873-75. He died
in 1876, aged 53; his statue stands on Woodhouse Moor
(Woodhouse Lane, qv). His wife, Sarah, died in 1909 and other
names on the memorial are: John Marsden, 1790-1875, Maria,
1793-1869 and Henry Rowland, 1859-1865.
