Corn Exchange, now community centre and offices. 1889 by Frank
Whitmore. Red brick with moulded brick details and slate roof
replacing original glazed roof.
EXTERIOR: single-storey gabled front to street behind
single-storey flat-roofed narthex. Central entrance in narthex
consisting of doorway recessed behind a basket-arched opening
flanked by engaged columns with base fluting. One 2-light
casement right and left under basket arches. Jambs, aprons and
lintels of windows elaborated with moulded brick. Panelled and
balustraded parapet. Main gable wall above with a
triple-arched casement under a basket arch set in raised and
pedimented field. Gable apex surmounted by double-curved
pediment.
Returns: 6 bays, articulated by pilasters. Windows are
triple-arched casements under basket arches with jambs, aprons
and lintels of moulded brick.
INTERIOR: three arches at east end with Y-traceried heads.
Pilasters to north and south walls.
