Hotel. 1889. By WM Boden. Red Ruabon brick, terracotta and
stone; Westmorland green slate roof. Free C17 style.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys of 4 bays to Upper Northgate Street,
corner turret and 4 bays plus simpler wing over carriage
entry, to George Street. Features reflect those on No.3
Northgate Street opposite, Chester IM, by TM Lockwood. Some
leaded and stained glass; plinth, moulded stringcourses and
pilasters through full height of building, of moulded brick
and terracotta.
The face to Upper Northgate Street has double part-glazed
doors, a 4-light mullioned and transomed window to each side
and a cross-window towards corner; round-arched window at
canted corner, curved balcony above doorway has round-arched
double doors with heavy radial-bar fan; stone, brick and
terracotta canted oriel to each side; 2-pane sash towards
corner; corner oriel. The second floor has balconies with
terracotta balustrades above oriels, paired 2-pane sashes and
a tall shaped pediment-gable to entrance bay of stone and
terracotta inscribed "BULL AND STIRRUP HOTEL" in gilt, with
City and County arms. 3 pediments over other windows; the
corner turret has foliar carving to stone panel inscribed
"BULL AND STIRRUP HOTEL" in gilt; terracotta cornice;
pyramidal copper roof.
The face to George Street is simpler. The ground floor has a
4-light mullioned and transomed window, double doors and
2-light overlight in stone frame, two 1-light stone casements
and, in E wing, altered carriage entrance. The first floor has
four 2-pane sashes with leaded overlights. The second floor
has three 2-pane sashes under curved terracotta pediments with
ball finials. Each storey above the carriage entrance has two
4-pane sashes; shallow-pitched hipped dormer roofs.
INTERIOR retains its floor-plan, but with openings formed
between rooms. Panelled bar with tiled frieze over;
fireplaces, one with pillared overmantel; dogleg stair with
vigorously expressed newels and balusters; upper storeys not
inspected.
