Stone steps in 2 offset flights of 12 and 15 steps, from the
City Walls to the Groves. 1820-22. For Chester Corporation.
The lower flight is separated from the wall by a strip of
Gothick stonework. A plaque probably 1881, set into the wall,
erroneously dated, is inscribed RECORDER'S STEPS Erected by
the Corporation of this City A.D.1700 for the Convenience of
ROGER COMBERBACH, Recorder.
A boarded door in probably late C19 ashlar archway through the
wall near the drum tower (qv), west, is inscribed EDGAR HOUSE.
