Description

SOUTHWARK

TQ3375NW CAMBERWELL GROVE
636-1/46/157 (East side)
Nos.187 AND 189
and attached railings

GV II

2 houses. Mid C19. Stucco, once scored to imitate ashlaring.
Roof obscured by eaves and parapet. The pair has a U-shaped
plan with the mouth facing the street, and, taken together, a
symmetrical elevation. The style is Italianate.
EXTERIOR: each has entrance set in recess of a 2-window range
and having 2 storeys. To side, at the corner, a one-window
wide "tower" range of 3 storeys. All openings are flat-arched,
unless otherwise stated. Up stairs to broad entrance porch
common to both units. Entrances with overlights set at joins
with higher ranges; between is a pair of windows with flush
surrounds.
The ground-floor windows in the projecting end ranges are
tripartite with architraves. Storey band between basement and
ground floors, and between ground and 1st floors. All
1st-floor windows have a shallow surround and an entablature
with a frieze of plain medallions. In the wings, this
entablature forms spandrels for the 2nd-floor windows which
have flush surrounds. Entablature over 1st-floor windows of
recessed section.
The high towers have shallow-pitched, gable-facing roofs with
projecting eaves on all sides, a feature which, more than any
other, gives the pair the feel of buildings in the Italian
Campagna. Stacks to returns and party wall.
Sashes of original design: to the side of each entrance, 6x6;
all upper-floor windows 6x6 rebuilt to an original design;
some original glazing bars on the returns; overlight with
decorative glazing to each entrance.
The 2-storey gable-facing structure to the left of No.187,
which dates to the mid to late C19 and has tripartite
1st-floor windows, is included.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron railings to areas and stairs,
the latter being unusually elaborate.
Nos 191 & 193 (qv) are of identical design and form a group.
