Ritual bath house or mikvah. Early C20. Red brick front with
ashlar and blue brick dressings, rendered plinth; yellow brick
to sides and rear; Welsh slate roof. Rectangular on plan, with
projecting central entrance porch; stands to rear of Sir Moses
Montefiore Synagogue (qv).
EXTERIOR: single storey; 3 bays. Tall plinth capped with
chamfered blue brick and flush ashlar band. Entrance has
flight of 5 stone steps to board door and 3-pane overlight in
double-chamfered round-arched brick reveal beneath brick band
and coped gable containing an ashlar tablet with Hebrew relief
inscription. To left, a casement with glazing bars, stone sill
and lintel. To right, a small ornate terracotta ventilator
grille. 2-course corbelled brick eaves. Raised coped gables
with prominent corbelled brick kneelers. Roof light and tall
roof stack with 4-course corbelled brick and ashlar cap. Left
return has window with stone sill and lintel. Rear has a
2-course brick band.
INTERIOR: retains original fittings with glazed tiled walls,
sunken bath to right and wooden partitioned changing cubicles.
An unusual survival, reflecting the former significance of
Grimsby's Jewish community and the town's prominence in the
movement of Jews from Europe to Britain and America. For
history and references, see entry for Sir Moses Montefiore
Synagogue.
