Lamp post in front of Nos.42 and 43

II

Gas standard on the east side of Devonshire Place in front of
Nos 42 and 43 (qv). Designed in the 1880s, possibly cast as
late as 1930; converted to electric light in late C19 or early
C20. Cast-iron and another metal. Octagonal, panelled socle;
tapering octagonal shaft, panelled to match base; simple coved
capital; single maintenance arm. Tudor in style. The timing
mechanism, or clock box above is marked BLEECO and forms a
base for swan-neck, tubular bracket. The latter is braced by a
metal fillet in the form of a tendril. Shallow dish reflector.
