Corner house. Early C19. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic over basement. Main elevation of
3-window range and return are linked by broad, curved corner
of one-window range. To either side of the corner is a
full-height, shallow, rectangular bay which is topped by a
pediment. Flat-arched entrance with door of C19 design set
into bay near corner; cornice above second floor of the 2 bays
only. Ground floor has banded rustication which turns the
corner; ground floor of return obscured. Rustication
terminates at left party wall in pilaster strip, above which
rises a giant pilaster to first and second floors. Cornice to
pilaster, continuous across the facades, its upper fascia
level with the sills of attic windows; attic finishes with a
cornice. All windows are flat arched with projecting sills;
above 2 ground floor windows is a single recessed panel;
first-floor windows are floor-to-ceiling; sill band to
second-floor windows. All mouldings and bands continue across
the corner. Return elevation similar to main. Sashes of
original design: to corner-window range, 6/6, 9/9, 6/6 and
3/6, ground floor through attic respectively; next to corner
on return, 6/6 and 3/6 (now painted) to second floor and attic
respectively; third-window range of return recently rebuilt,
9/9, 6/6, and 3/6 to first floor through attic respectively;
the second-range of the return is blocked.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Nos 44 and 47 (qv) form a group together with Royal York
Buildings (qv).
