House, ground floor converted into shops in early to mid C19;
since 1989 restored as a restaurant and commercial offices at
the same time that it was incorporated into the Nile Pavilions
Complex, designed by the Robin Clayton Partnership. Late C18
or early C19. Brick in Flemish bond with stucco cement-faced
shop front to ground floor. Roof parapeted.
EXTERIOR: 4-window range; 2-window range to return. 3 storeys
over basement, stepping down to 2 on the long elevation; the
plan of the corner on the first and second floors, is
segmental and rebated one brick's thickness. All windows are
camber arched with projecting sills. Entrance on corner set in
shop front comprised of bays framed by coupled Tuscan
pilasters and a continuous entablature. Entablature above of
brick with a brick dentil cornice. This listing applies only
to the outer walls of the building. It does not apply to the
2-storey brick structure to the north of the block nor to the
shop front north of the 4th-window range which is reproduction
of the original.
No.16 forms a group with Nos 3-8, 10-13, 15, 17-17A Prince
Albert Street (qv).
