Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104NW TRAFALGAR STREET

The Prince Albert Public House

II

Public house. c1845. Stucco, roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 3-window range and double-fronted.
Flat-arched entrance with pilasters and entablature; ground
and first floors originally flanked by giant pilasters, the
outer pair with palmette ornament to the capitals, the inner
Ionic; on the left-hand side these pilasters are intact and
the ground-floor window has its original form, flat-arched
with pilasters and entablature; but alterations were made on
the right-hand side, probably in the late C19: broad,
flat-arched window with quadrant corners, framed by rusticated
pilasters and cornice which displace the lower part of the
original pilasters. The first-floor windows are round-arched
with pilasters, archivolt, and console as keystone; broad
entablature with dentil cornice; attic storey; secondary
cornice; first- and second-floor windows have sashes of
original design; parapet, stepped up to centre and with its
own cornice; side stacks; the late C19 ground-floor treatment
is returned in Frederick Place with 2 flat-arched entrances.
INTERIOR: the interior has dados of tongue-and-groove boarding
to the ground floor, and a dogleg staircase with turned newel,
stick balusters and open string.
