Includes: No.8A and attached railings REGENT STREET.
House, now flats and shops, with attached railings. 1828-1834,
with later additions and alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with
painted stucco to front and left facades, Welsh slate roof and
cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement, 2 first-floor windows.
First floor: blind opening, 6/6 sash with blind box, both with
plain reveals and sills. Second floor: 6/6 sashes in plain
reveals and with sills. Ground floor, entrance:
elliptically-arched opening, 6 steps to part-glazed, 6-panel
door with glazed sidelights and narrow pilasters between,
cornice with guttae, elliptical overlight with decorative
glazing-bars. Fielded-panel reveals and barrel vaulted roof.
To right a narrow 6/6 sash in plain reveals and with sill. To
left a shop front: entrance to angle a part-glazed door.
Plate-glass window to right between pilaster strips.
Continuous frieze and cornice. Basement has 3-pane casement.
Cornice, low parapet, copings. Roof hipped to left. Ridge and
side stacks.
Left return: 3 first-floor windows: 10-pane French windows
with divided overlights and replacement continuous balcony.
Second floor: 6/6 sashes, plain reveals, sills. Ground floor:
1/1 sash, shop front has projecting bay with plate glass,
frieze and cornice. Basement has part-glazed door and 6/1
sash.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and gate have bars with
sword-hilt finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Grove Street was laid out in 1828, the west
side and lower part of the east side were built by 1834.
Occupies a significant corner position.
