Includes: No.49 PORTLAND STREET.
Terrace of 4 houses, now flats and offices and attached
railings. c1824-1836 with later additions and alterations.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, Welsh slate
roof and cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements, attics to 2 left
dwellings, 8 first-floor windows. First floor has 6/9 sashes
with sills throughout. Second floor has two 6/9 sashes to
left, otherwise 6/6 sashes, sills. Frieze, cornice (missing
above 5th to 8th windows), low parapet, copings.
Ground floor: to left, entrance to left return a 6-panel door
with overlight in fluted surround with cornice; otherwise
steps to left entrances: 3-panel door with overlight with
glazing bars; 6-panel door with overlight; 4-panel door with
overlight, all in tooled architraves with shallow pediments.
6/9 sash to left, otherwise canted bays to right rise from
basements mainly 1/1 sashes, except one 2/2 sash.
Basements have 6/9 and 6/6 sashes and part-glazed doors. Roof
dormer to No.15. Ridge stacks.
Left return: 6/9 sashes throughout. Frieze, cornice,
pedimented gable containing 3/6 sash.
INTERIOR: No.19 has staircase with stick balusters, otherwise
not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps and to area
with gates have lancet and anthemion finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Place was laid out in 1823-1824.
