Pair of houses. c1824-1836 with later additions and
alterations. Pinkish-brown brick with rough-cast concrete to
left and painted stucco to right and Welsh slate roofs.
2 storeys with basements, 6 first-floor windows. First floor
has 6/6 sashes with sills throughout. Ground floor: steps to
central entrances, 2-panel doors with overlights, that to left
with blind box, and with frieze and ornamental consoles
supporting cornice. 10-pane French windows to left, 6-pane
French windows with divided overlight to right. Basement has
6/6 sashes and casements. Decorative bargeboards to eaves, end
stacks.
INTERIOR: to No.9 a central narrow-openwell staircase with
stick balusters; otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Place was laid out 1823-1824.
