GV II

Terrace of 5 houses, now flats and attached railings. Numbered
right to left, described left to right. 1824-1836 with later
additions and alterations. Reddish-brown brick with stucco
facades, painted except to right (No.16), Welsh slate roofs
and cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 and 3 storeys (from left) 2:3:3:2:2 with
basements, 2 to right have attic dormers; 10 first-floor
windows (2 per house, house to left has canted bay to full
height.
First floor: (No.24) band, 1/1 sash with margin-lights with
stained glass in plain reveals and with hollow-moulded arch
with keystone in plain architrave; bay has 2/2 sash between
1/1 sashes and continuous sill. Then two 6/6 sashes and six
3/6 sashes all in plain reveals and with sills. Attic dormers
to Nos 16 and 18. Third floor (Nos 20 & 22): No.20 has second
floor cornice; four 3/6 sashes in plain reveals and with
sills. Ground floor windows: canted bay has three 1/1 sashes
with horns in plain reveals and with continuous sills. Then
1/1 sash with horns, 6/6 sash, 2/2 sash with horns and 6/6
sash all in plain reveals and with sills.
Entrances: (No.24) steps to part-glazed, panelled door in
plain reveals with chamfered, cambered-arched surround and
keystone, hoodmould with foliate stops. Nos 22, 20, 18 and 16
alike: 3 and 4 steps to part-glazed door with overlight in
pilastered surround with frieze and cornice.
Basements: (No.24) two 4/4 sashes to bay; (No.22) 3/6 sash and
door; then casement; 3/6 sash and casement window; 3/6 sash
and door. Copings throughout. Tall ridge stacks with cornices.
Rear: Nos 18 and 16 have 6-pane French windows with divided
overlights and verandahs with diamond pattern balustrade.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps and to areas
have cusped finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Place was laid out 1823-1824.
