Terrace of 4 houses and attached railings. Numbered right to
left, described left to right. c1824, with later additions and
alterations including mid-C20 roof dormer to No.28.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and Welsh
slate roof and cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements, attic to No.28, with
basements, 10 first-floor windows, arranged 3:3:2:2.
First floor has blind opening to right otherwise 6/6 sashes;
second floor: first, second and ninth openings are blind,
otherwise four 6/6 sashes then three 3/6 sashes; all with
plain reveals and sills. Frieze to two left dwellings,
cornice, low parapet.
Entrances: panel door; recessed plank door with overlight
within wide, pilastered surround with frieze and cornice;
4-panel door with overlight, frieze and cornice; 4-panel door
with overlight in solid porch with pillars, frieze, cornice
and blocking course. 4 steps to part-glazed door within
distyle Ionic porch with engaged pilasters, frieze, cornice
and blocking course.
Fenestration: blind opening, casement, three 6/6 sashes, 2/2
sash. Basement has glazed doors, casements and 6/6 sash. Ridge
and end stacks.
To rear: No.32 has 3 tripartite windows, two with 9/9 between
2/2 sashes and one with 6/6 between 2/2 sashes, otherwise 6/6
and 4/4 sashes. No.28 has full-height canted bay with 9/9, 6/6
and 4/4 sashes.
INTERIOR: noted as retaining original plasterwork and joinery
including to No.30 a staircase with turned balusters; No.28
has shutters to some windows. Otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings and to sides of steps have
anthemion finials.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Place was laid out in 1823-1824.
