Formerly known as: King's Arms Inn WARWICK STREET.
Includes: No.44 CLARENDON STREET.
Former public house, now house. c1826, with later additions
and alterations including late-C19 single-storey range to left
return. Reddish-brown brick, partly whitewashed and rendered,
with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate and plain-tile roofs.
EXTERIOR: main range of 3 storeys, 3 first-floor windows, with
lean-to to right and end and rear ranges. Plinth. First and
second floors have blind central windows, otherwise first
floor has 6/6 sashes and second floor has 3/6 sashes. Ground
floor: central entrance a part-glazed and panelled door, in
plain reveals, doorcase has Tuscan pilasters supporting frieze
and hood. All windows in plain reveals. End stacks with
cornices.
Range to left: 2 boarded and bricked-in basket-arched openings
with Tuscan column between supporting hollow-chamfered arch
with keystone and imposts; full-height pilaster to left;
modillion cornice. Hipped roof has raised centre.
Clarendon Street facade has double-chamfered, moulded plinth,
end pilasters. Centre projects.
2 outer similar recessed entrances 6-panel double-doors with
basket-arched overlights, now boarded over, reveals have
Tuscan pilaster strips; cambered arch with central keystone
and imposts. Between are tall, basket-arched window openings,
now boarded in and with Tuscan pilasters between. Moulded
cornice.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: in 1829 this was the King's Arms Inn. Warwick
Street was laid out in 1822-1826.
