Terraced houses. c1825. No.42 by Amon Wilds and Charles
Augustine Busby, the rest possibly so.
Stucco, white brick, roof of Welsh slate to Nos 36, 38-9,
41-2, of asbestos slate to No.37, and of tiles to No.40; the
brickwork of No.42 painted.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement, 2-window range. The
house-fronts consist of full-height, and almost full width,
segmental bays. Basement and ground floor stuccoed and in
places scored as ashlar.
Round-arched entrance (altered to flat-arched on No.38),
flanked by simple Doric engaged columns supporting a slightly
projecting and entirely plain 'entablature', the columns
missing on Nos 36 and 42.
All windows flat-arched; those to first and second floors with
heads of gauged brick; continuous bracketed balconies with
cast-iron balustrades to first-floor windows on Nos 36-39; Nos
40-41 have individual shallow cast-iron balconies; No.42 has a
balcony carried on 4 panelled and tapering columns, with
cast-iron balustrade and coved and scalloped awning; Nos 41
and 42 retain sashes of original design; cornice and blocking
course; stacks to party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Cast-iron railings to steps and garden fronts with spearhead
finials, probably much renewed; garden walls of brick and
cobbles to Nos 39 and 41-42.
