Five lamp posts at the west end of
Madeira Drive

GV II

5 street lamps between the Aquarium (qv) and the station of
Volk's Electric Railway (not included). c1893 the brackets and
lamps to a design of c1935. Cast-iron. Fluted socle with an
entry door carrying the municipal coat of arms; base of
columns swelling and decorated with acanthus leaves; the rest
of the column fluted as far as 2 short maintenance arms;
palm-leaf capital above, apparently a separate fitting but
integral with the 2 curved brackets from which hang octagonal
spiked lanterns; the space between the brackets filled with
openwork foliage ornament and crowned by the municipal coat of
arms.
