The following description will treat the elevation as a single
unit.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement. 2-window range. C20 glazed
brick to the ground floor; brick in header bond to the upper
floors, painted on the first floor only; right return faced
with stucco cement. The covering of the 2-span roof is
obscured by the combination of a low parapet above and a
tortuous street pattern below. 2 round-arched entrances to the
ground floor, that in the centre with a C19 fanlight and that
to the left is blocked; both now have glazed brick
architraves. To either side of centre entrance a window. All
the windows are flat arched. Storey band in glazed brick tile
between ground and first floors. 2 segmental bays to first
floor, each with tripartite windows and sashes of an original
C19 design: 6 x 6 to centre and 4 x 4 to sides. Entablature
and projecting cornice to each bay. The second- and
third-floor windows have deep reveals, projecting sills and
sashes of an original early C19 design: 8 x 8 to second floor
and 4 x 8 to third. Coping to parapet.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Market Inn changed its name from The
Golden Fleece in 1990. It was formerly known as The 3 Chimneys
because the owner was reputed to be the Prince of Wales'
chimneysweep.
