GV II

Gateway arch with paired gates and flanking balustrades. 1865.
By John Gibson. For Henry Spencer Lucy. Ashlar and
wrought-iron.
Archway has round arch between pairs of pilasters with
enriched rustication on plinths with raised-rusticated panels;
top entablature has pulvinated frieze with diapering and
triglyphs over pilasters; blocking course with central
semicircular panel with Lucy arms; archivolt has enriched
rusticated voussoirs and large console key with fishscale and
spandrels have monograms.
Small scrolls to returns. Paired gates with decorative
finials. Balustrades have serpentine double curves on plan;
high plinth, pierced strapwork panels similar to those on
south wing at Charlecote Park (qv) between paired fluted
console-piers and moulded coping.
